Hello, Bytes!

NEWS - 01 Sep 20

Hello everyone and welcome to the Bytes blog! We’ve started this blog in order to keep you updated with all the work that's going on behind the scenes and the progress that we are making. We’ve made considerable process but as we’ve said before, it’s slow work as we both work other jobs. We hope to be able to take this project on full time in the future but until the system is fully up and running that is likely impossible. I want to take the time in this post to direct you to our website now. Right now, you can see the homepage layout that will be accessible for everyone with sections ‘explore’ and ‘login’ links. Right now you will only be able to access the ‘explore’ section of the website with ‘login’ currently being reserved for alpha testers that will be rolling out hopefully in the coming weeks. Under the ‘explore’ section, you will be able to see some of the functionality of what Bytes will look like when it is publicly available including the recipe feed and be able to explore recipes that are submitted by our alpha testers as they are submitted. However, I’d like to note that all of these features are subject to change over time as Bytes evolves and many more features will become available in due course. Thanks for reading and hopefully we will have more updates available for you soon!

September Update

NEWS - 12 Oct 20

Hey everyone.

September has been a bit of a hectic month!

Earlier in the month we had a problem with our database. A lot of people tried to log on to the website at one time, causing our website to crash, this was traffic that we just weren’t prepared for! We’re well on the way to fixing that now.

We also noticed there was an abundance of missing DOS protection so we began looking at implementation of upgrades across the platform to minimise the action against the platform's back end architecture.
To achieve this we explored and implemented basic versioning of:

Addition of pagination for posts and recipes in the feed and explore page

Addition of image and content caching, with session storage for those users who have already visited the platform

Changes to minor styling to match platform standards (squared login and register button to match platform)

Removed the search bar for public access i.e in the explore page

Styling to truncate the text better on shrunken posts

Pop up share for public, share and love for those who are logged in

You may have also noticed that we’ve started to get more content on the explore page. We have a few alpha testers who are working behind the scenes to help us test out Bytes and find any bugs as we go, but they are also bringing those of you who are viewing this some yummy, tasty recipes to try out in the meantime.

March 2021 Update

NEWS - 09 Mar 21

I posted a while ago about compiling a list of recipes that I used that were both budget friendly and healthy.

Whilst I aim to cook from scratch as often as I possibly can, once or twice a week we do resort to easy freezer tea because, honestly, I don’t have the time or energy after chasing a toddler around all day to cook a lovely meal for 1-3 hours that will probably just end up tipped on the floor by my toddler. That being said, we try to avoid ready meals and at least serve something nutritious on the side when we’re having an ‘easy’ tea even if it is just a side salad or a serving of frozen mixed vegetables.

So I decided to post a list of some of our favourite budget meals and how much they cost per portion*. Note: Not all of these recipes are on Bytes yet but I will try to get them on as soon as possible!

Each recipe is for a family of 4. Initial Cost is if you have none of the ingredients in your cupboards.

Sausage Casserole - We serve ours with yorkshire puddings and mashed potatoes for £2.15. Initial Cost £5.48.

Cheats Katsu Curry - Served with Rice £2.38 Initial Cost £7.04

Chicken & Vegetable Pie - Served with mash £4.86 Initial Cost £7.65

Ham, Cheese & Spring Onion Stuffed Jacket Potatoes with Baked Beans - £2.52, Initial Cost £5.14

Cottage Pie served with green beans and Broccoli - £4.00, £8.10 Initial Cost

*Assuming you have staples like salt, pepper, butter and milk for seasoning.
,
